Russian ground advances in Ukraine have stalled according to independent mapping, prompting Moscow to ramp up strikes on energy infrastructure ahead of winter.

Russian ground forces have stalled across the frontline in Ukraine despite Moscow claiming military successes, according to independent mapping analysis. Data from the Institute for the Study of War and Ukrainian monitoring group DeepState indicate virtually no net territorial changes over four weeks in September, following limited Russian advances of around 133 square kilometers in August. Meanwhile, Ukrainian counterattacks have reclaimed over 745 square kilometers near Oleksandrivka since January.

With ground momentum slowing, Russia has intensified long-range strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure ahead of winter. Prime Minister Serhij Koreckyj and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed recent strikes targeted Kyiv's power grid in the largest wave since last spring. The escalation comes as Ukraine's drone interception rate dropped from 92 percent in May to 83 percent in September.
