Russian frontline advances remained static through September, prompting Moscow to intensify long-range missile and drone strikes against Ukraine's energy grid ahead of winter.

Russian territorial advances in Ukraine remained largely static through September, despite claims of progress from Moscow. Mapping assessments from the Institute for the Study of War and the DeepState project showed net frontline changes near zero over a four-week period, while Finnish analyst group Black Bird Group recorded limited Russian gains of roughly 133 square kilometers in August.

Concurrently, Ukrainian forces launched targeted counterattacks, including in the Oleksandrivka region, where Kyiv reports liberating over 745 square kilometers and 26 settlements since January.

With ground movement constrained, Russian forces intensified long-range strikes against Ukraine's power grid ahead of winter. Prime Minister Serhij Koreckyj confirmed recent bombardments on thermal and electrical plants were the heaviest since last spring, primarily targeting Kyiv and surrounding regions. Meanwhile, Ukraine's drone interception rate fell to 83 percent in September, down from 92 percent in May.
