Russia intensifies domestic control amid election preparations and security concerns

Russian authorities tighten domestic control ahead of elections, while public fears of mobilization rise and Western reports highlight potential NATO testing.
Ahead of September's parliamentary elections, Russian authorities have intensified measures against political opposition. The Yabloko party was banned, and politician Lev Shlosberg received an 11-year prison sentence. Simultaneously, concerns regarding potential post-election military mobilization to address war losses in Ukraine have prompted some citizens to sell property and plan to leave the country.
These domestic pressures coincide with late-summer political uncertainty, historically described in Russia as "Black August." Observers highlight structural vulnerabilities surrounding 73-year-old President Vladimir Putin, pointing to the absence of a defined succession plan. Internationally, Western intelligence reports suggest Moscow could evaluate NATO's collective defense commitment in the coming years through hybrid tactics, cyber operations, or limited military incursions.
