Russia and Ukraine trade strikes as diplomatic peace efforts continue

Russia and Ukraine continued launching cross-border attacks despite diplomatic engagements and proposals for a temporary pause in strikes. Russian missile and drone bombardments across Ukrainian regions, including Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, resulted in civilian casualties. European Union officials condemned a Russian attack on a train near the Polish border as an attempt to intimidate European allies. In response, Ukrainian forces targeted Russian infrastructure, including an oil refinery.

The escalation coincides with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly. US President Donald Trump stated both nations agreed to refrain from targeting energy infrastructure. However, Kyiv clarified it will halt such strikes only if Western partners guarantee Moscow refrains from attacking Ukrainian energy, transport, and food supply networks.
