Russia and Ukraine trade overnight strikes despite diplomatic visit

Regional fighting between Russia and Ukraine persisted overnight, despite agreements from both leaderships to suspend strikes on Moscow and Kyiv during visits by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for peace talks.

Overnight attacks caused casualties across Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Belgorod, and Sochi. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemned a Russian strike on a train near the Ukrainian-Polish border, describing it as an attempt to intimidate European partners. Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a decree dismissing the country's prosecutor general.

Reports indicate Ukrainian troops received orders for a four-day operational pause during the US-mediated diplomatic discussions in Kyiv and Moscow.
