A fourth summer heatwave brings temperatures near 40C to Europe, triggering red alerts in Italy, record heat in Austria, and thousands of excess deaths in France.

A fourth summer heatwave continues across Europe, pushing temperatures toward 40 degrees Celsius and triggering widespread health warnings. Italian authorities expanded top-tier red alerts to all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as extreme heat persists and at least four heat-related deaths were reported.

Record high temperatures were logged elsewhere, with a suburb of Vienna recording Austria's highest-ever temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius. In France, health officials reported more than 7,300 excess deaths linked to extreme heat between May and July, with meteorological data indicating 52 heatwave days since mid-June. Forecasts indicate continued high temperatures, elevated wildfire risks, and severe drought conditions affecting Western Europe, including France and the United Kingdom.
