Record heat and drought have forced over 2,000 wildfire evacuations in Germany while low river levels disrupt energy generation and transport across Europe.

Record-breaking summer temperatures and persistent drought conditions continue to strain infrastructure and trigger emergencies across Europe. In western Germany, authorities evacuated more than 2,000 residents from the municipality of Hürtgenwald in North Rhine-Westphalia after a nearby wildfire advanced to within several hundred metres of residential areas.

The incident follows Western Europe's hottest recorded June-July period, during which global ocean surface temperatures reached a historic peak of 20.96°C. Severely diminished water levels along major river basins have curtailed inland freight and forced nuclear power plants in Hungary and Romania to reduce operations due to cooling shortages. In Romania, naval engineers conducted controlled riverbed explosions in the Danube to divert dwindling water supplies toward active reactors. Economists project that persistent transport disruptions and power constraints could cost Central European economies up to two billion euros in the third quarter.
