A study reveals persistent gender underrepresentation in Portuguese cabinets, alongside high domestic violence rates and a 78 percent drop in Atlantic migrant arrivals.

Recent reports highlight key gender and migration developments in Portugal and the broader region. A study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation revealed that women comprised just 15 percent of government ministers in Portugal over the last 50 years, with female politicians facing higher technical qualification requirements than male peers. Simultaneously, domestic violence remains a critical challenge, with authorities recording over 14,000 complaints, representing an average of 82 reported cases daily. Amid these social issues, eight Afghan female students celebrated one year of refuge in Portugal after fleeing Taliban restrictions on education and public life. Meanwhile, International Organization for Migration data showed a 78 percent drop in irregular Atlantic route arrivals to Spain in early 2026 due to increased border enforcement in Senegal and Mauritania, though humanitarian groups warn remaining journeys have grown more dangerous.
