Portugal's parliament has defeated a motion of censure brought by the far-right Chega party against the governing Democratic Alliance coalition following abstention by opposition Socialists.

Portugal's parliament has rejected a motion of censure brought by the far-right Chega party against the governing minority Democratic Alliance coalition.

The motion was introduced following controversies involving the Minister of Internal Administration. It failed after a three-hour debate, with lawmakers from the ruling coalition voting against the measure while the main opposition Socialist Party abstained, ensuring its defeat.

Closing the debate, Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro criticized Chega for advancing a measure destined to fail, suggesting voters would deliver a political judgment on the party's actions. He reiterated that the executive will continue governing without a permanent preferred legislative partner.
