Portugal will offer 171 places in migrant holding centers by September, while domestic violence reports average 82 per day and Atlantic migration drops significantly.

Portugal's government announced that temporary centers for undocumented migrants will reach 171 places in September, falling short of its original target of 300 spots. Expansion work at the Porto installation facility drove the increased capacity.

Meanwhile, national figures highlighted persistent social issues, with law enforcement logging over 14,000 domestic violence cases, averaging 82 reported incidents daily. Concurrently, eight Afghan women marked one year of resettlement in Portugal after fleeing Taliban restrictions on female employment, education, and public life.

Regionally, International Organization for Migration data revealed a 78 percent decline in arrivals via the West African Atlantic route in early 2026. Experts attributed the fall to enhanced surveillance between Senegal and Mauritania, though remaining transit routes have become increasingly hazardous for migrants.
