A study shows women held just 15 percent of ministerial posts in Portugal over 50 years, while domestic violence complaints continue at high levels.

A new study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation shows that women held only 15 percent of cabinet positions in Portugal over the past 50 years, often requiring higher technical credentials than men. Concurrently, domestic violence remains a persistent challenge, with authorities recording over 14,000 complaints, averaging 82 cases daily.

Additionally, eight Afghan women marked one year of refuge in Portugal after fleeing Taliban restrictions. In regional migration news, International Organization for Migration data shows a 78 percent drop in irregular arrivals along the West African Atlantic route to Spain in early 2026 due to heightened enforcement in Senegal and Mauritania, though monitors warn sea journeys are growing more dangerous.
