Recent Portuguese reports highlight political gender disparities, ongoing domestic abuse challenges, Afghan refugee sanctuary, and a major drop in West African migration arrivals.

A study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation shows women comprised just 15 percent of Portuguese cabinet ministers over the last 50 years, often requiring higher technical credentials than men to secure executive roles. Concurrently, domestic abuse remains widespread, with police recording over 14,000 incidents—averaging 82 daily cases.

In social affairs, eight Afghan women celebrated one year of asylum in Portugal after escaping Taliban restrictions on movement and speech. Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration reported a 78 percent drop in West African Atlantic route arrivals to Spain between January and April 2026, crediting strengthened maritime border cooperation between Senegal and Mauritania.
