Portugal expands temporary migrant holding capacity to 171 spots while reporting high domestic violence figures and observing a decline in West African migration.

Portugal will expand its temporary placement capacity for undocumented migrants to 171 spots by September following work at its Porto center, falling short of a planned 300-spot target.

Separately, Portuguese authorities recorded more than 14,000 domestic violence incidents, averaging 82 reported cases per day. Concurrently, eight Afghan women marked one year of resettlement in Portugal after fleeing Taliban restrictions on public life and education.

In broader migration developments, International Organization for Migration data revealed a 78 percent decline in arrivals along the West African Atlantic route in early 2026. Increased border cooperation between Senegal and Mauritania curbed departures, though remaining passage routes have become increasingly hazardous.
