Portugal will expand temporary migrant capacity to 171 spots by September as Atlantic route arrivals drop 78 percent, alongside updates on domestic violence and Afghan refugees.

Portugal will increase its temporary housing capacity for undocumented migrants to 171 places by September through expansions at its Porto facility, falling short of an initial target of 300 spots.

Separately, Portuguese authorities logged over 14,000 domestic violence incidents, averaging 82 reported cases daily across the nation. Concurrently, eight Afghan women marked one year of resettlement in Portugal after fleeing Taliban restrictions on education, employment, and public life.

In broader migration developments, International Organization for Migration figures show a 78 percent drop in arrivals along the West African Atlantic route during early 2026. Increased border surveillance between Senegal and Mauritania contributed to the decline, though remaining transit routes have become more hazardous.
