Portugal will reach 171 temporary migrant spaces by September while domestic violence reports average 82 per day, alongside shifting Atlantic migration trends.

Portugal plans to expand its temporary holding capacity for undocumented migrants to 171 spaces by September through work on its Porto facility, falling short of an earlier 300-space target.

Concurrently, national safety data indicates Portuguese law enforcement recorded over 14,000 domestic violence cases, averaging 82 incidents daily. Separately, eight Afghan women marked one year of asylum in Portugal after escaping Taliban bans on women in public life.

Internationally, International Organization for Migration figures show West African Atlantic route arrivals dropped 78 percent in early 2026. Heightened border policing between Senegal and Mauritania reduced departures from standard launch points, although remaining travel attempts carry greater danger.
