Macron calls for protest bans across France following weekend riots
French President Emmanuel Macron has asked local authorities to ban planned protests, excluding union events, as security forces prepare a massive deployment including military troops.
French President Emmanuel Macron has instructed local authorities to ban all protests scheduled for Saturday, making an exception only for demonstrations organized by labor unions. The directive follows a weekend of unrest over rising living costs, during which nearly 2,400 people were detained nationwide and local businesses sustained extensive damage. In Lyon, municipal authorities implemented a total ban on all public gatherings.
To maintain order, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced a massive security deployment incorporating military personnel alongside police units. Meanwhile, European Union regulators have opened an inquiry into suspected pro-Russian disinformation campaigns accused of utilizing social media networks to amplify coverage of the riots across Europe.
