Portugal's Left Bloc has introduced a resolution to secure abortion access in the public health system following service disruptions at a major regional hospital.

Portugal’s Left Bloc has introduced a parliamentary resolution urging the government to guarantee prompt access to voluntary pregnancy terminations within the National Health Service. The initiative follows statements from local patient committees reporting that Almada's Garcia de Orta Hospital had "discontinued" the service. Health administrators maintained the interruption is only a "temporary suspension".

The legislative move coincides with national data showing persistent social vulnerabilities, as authorities recorded over 14,000 domestic violence incidents, averaging 82 daily reports across the country. Meanwhile, eight Afghan women who escaped Taliban rule marked one year of resettlement in Portugal.

In regional migration, the International Organization for Migration documented a 78 percent decline in West African Atlantic route arrivals in early 2026, attributing the shift to enhanced border enforcement between Senegal and Mauritania.
