France imposes targeted curfews as Macron retains interior minister

Relative calm returned to French cities overnight as targeted curfews took effect following widespread weekend unrest and thousands of arrests.
French authorities report that localized overnight curfews restored relative calm across major urban centers following widespread weekend unrest over living costs and educational conditions. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu directed regional prefects to enforce targeted movement restrictions in specific zones, including parts of Paris and Marseille, to curb looting and property destruction. Lecornu attributed much of the violence to "extreme-left" groups and criminal opportunists, warning that broader emergency measures remain an option if disturbances resume.
Meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged security "failures" during the demonstrations, which led to more than 2,400 arrests, but rejected a resignation offer from Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Nuñez publicly admitted that security forces briefly lost control during peak clashes over the weekend.
