French cities calm after targeted curfews imposed following weekend unrest

Targeted curfews across France contributed to a quieter night following a weekend of riots and looting, as President Emmanuel Macron rejected the interior minister's resignation.
Targeted curfews across France contributed to a quieter night following widespread riots and looting over the weekend, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced. Localized restrictions were enforced in specific urban locations, including central Paris, after demonstrations over rising living costs and school conditions escalated into violence. Lecornu attributed the destruction to criminal groups and the "ultra-left."
More than 2,400 individuals have been arrested nationwide after town halls were burned and hundreds of businesses damaged. President Emmanuel Macron criticized security "failures" during the unrest but refused to accept the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who acknowledged that police had "lost control" during peak disorder. Authorities noted that further measures remain possible if unrest resumes.
