Severe heatwaves continue across Europe as Italy issues top-level alerts, Austria sets a new national temperature record, and thousands of excess deaths are recorded in France.

Severe heatwaves continue to grip large parts of Europe, triggering red weather alerts and record-breaking temperatures across the continent. In Italy, health officials extended maximum warnings to 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius are expected to persist. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during peak hours to limit health risks.

Meanwhile, Austria recorded its highest temperature on record, reaching 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. High mortality rates have also been reported in France, where health authorities linked more than 7,300 excess deaths to heatwaves occurring between May and July. As meteorologists forecast continued extreme heat, nations including France and the United Kingdom are bracing for further temperature spikes, alongside an elevated risk of wildfires across Southern and Central Europe.
