Europe faces intensifying fourth heatwave as temperatures hit record highs
A fourth heatwave sweeps Europe with 40°C temperatures, triggering red alerts in Italy, record highs in Austria, and over 7,300 excess deaths in France.
Europe is confronting a fourth summer heatwave, with extreme temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius triggering health alerts and breaking records across the continent.
In Italy, the Ministry of Health extended red alerts to all 27 major cities, warning of severe health risks and advising the public to remain indoors between 11:00 and 18:00 as high temperatures are projected to persist for another week. Austria recorded its highest temperature on record, reaching 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths associated with 52 heatwave days recorded since May.
Drought conditions and elevated wildfire risks continue across Western Europe, with both the United Kingdom and France preparing for further heat.
