EU extends Russia sanctions as strikes persist despite proposed energy truce

US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine as EU sanctions are extended amid ongoing strikes.
US President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine agreed to refrain from targeting each other's energy infrastructure. However, combat operations and civilian casualties continue across several regions. Local officials in Ukraine's Kherson region reported two deaths and 14 injuries from Russian shelling, while Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia's Belgorod region and Sochi injured seven people.
Concurrently, European Union leadership extended sanctions against Moscow. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot denounced a Russian strike on a train near the Ukrainian-Polish border, framing it as an intentional effort to divide European nations. In Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree dismissing the country's prosecutor general.
