EU extends Russia sanctions after compromise on delisting oligarchs

EU member states agreed to extend sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian entities and individuals after reaching a compromise to remove two oligarchs from the restricted list.
European Union member states have officially extended sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and organizations tied to the invasion of Ukraine following intense diplomatic negotiations.
The extension was initially stalled after France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg pushed to remove steel tycoon Alisher Usmanov and banker Mikhail Fridman from the restricted list. To avoid allowing the measures to lapse entirely, member states ultimately accepted the compromise, removing both men from the sanctions list.
With the dispute resolved, EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg approved a new, record-setting sanctions package targeting Russia's war economy. European officials highlighted the decision as a decisive signal of continued backing for Kyiv, particularly amid growing uncertainties over future American military and financial support.
