EU extends Russia sanctions as fighting persists despite Trump energy agreement claim
Fighting continues in Ukraine and Russia despite US claims of an energy truce, while the EU extends sanctions and Kyiv dismisses its prosecutor general.
Hostilities between Russia and Ukraine persisted across multiple fronts despite statements by US President Donald Trump asserting that both sides had consented to suspend strikes against energy infrastructure. Recent attacks in Ukraine's Kherson region resulted in two fatalities and 14 injuries, while Ukrainian drone strikes reportedly wounded seven individuals in the Russian territories of Belgorod and Sochi.
Diplomatic tensions remain high as the European Union extended its existing sanctions framework against Moscow. EU diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas alongside French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot denounced a recent strike targeting a train near the Ukrainian border with Poland, characterizing the action as an effort to divide European partners. In domestic developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued an executive order dismissing the country's prosecutor general from office.
