Protesters block controversial Orange Order march along Garvaghy Road
A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown was blocked by thousands of counter-protesters following a High Court ruling permitting a limited march along Garvaghy Road.
A contentious Orange Order parade through Portadown was halted on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road. The event marked the first permitted march along the route through the predominantly nationalist area in nearly three decades, following a late-night Belfast High Court decision that upheld permission for 35 members to carry out a limited silent procession.
Police officers intervened to prevent the marchers from advancing beyond Drumcree Church due to escalating safety concerns. High-profile political figures, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, joined local residents to oppose the procession. Representatives from the Protestant organization subsequently entered discussions with law enforcement and community leaders as tensions remained elevated.
