Portadown Orange Order march halted by Garvaghy Road counter-protest
Thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road in Portadown on Sunday, forcing police to halt a contentious Orange Order march permitted by court ruling.
Tensions remain elevated in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after thousands of counter-protesters blocked a controversial Orange Order parade from passing through the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road on Sunday.
The march, restricted to 35 members proceeding silently, was granted permission following a Belfast High Court ruling that upheld a Parades Commission decision. It marked the first permitted procession along the historic Troubles-era flashpoint in nearly three decades.
However, police halted the procession near Drumcree Church to prevent potential unrest as crowds gathered on the road, joined by Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill. The delay pushed the parade past its court-mandated deadline, prompting Orange Order representatives to enter discussions regarding the standoff.
