Lula wins Brazilian runoff as Flávio Bolsonaro challenges election results
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Brazil's presidential runoff with 51.78% of the vote, while Flávio Bolsonaro submitted a request to annul the results.
Brazil's Superior Electoral Court confirmed incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured reelection with 51.78% of the vote against challenger Flávio Bolsonaro's 48.22%.
The election day was marked by logistics delays after voting hours were extended by two hours following reports of severe public transit shortages in several municipalities. Lula's campaign had petitioned the Supreme Court to extend voting hours, alleging that voters were effectively prevented from reaching polling stations due to a lack of buses.
Following the declaration of results, Flávio Bolsonaro submitted a legal petition seeking the annulment of the election outcome. Electoral authorities are currently evaluating the filing, leaving the country's political landscape in a state of uncertainty as legal challenges unfold.
