Analysis details KGB influence operations and threats against Finnish leaders in 1980
An analysis by political scientist Alpo Rusi examines KGB influence operations and threats against former Finnish Prime Minister Keijo Liinamaa around 1980.
Political science scholar Alpo Rusi has provided further details on Soviet covert operations in Finland during the late 1970s and early 1980s in an analysis published by Iltalehti. The research examines intelligence efforts by the KGB to manipulate domestic political dynamics as President Urho Kekkonen's era neared its end.
Central to Rusi's account are threats targeted at Keijo Liinamaa, who served as Prime Minister and National Conciliator. Before his death in December 1980, Liinamaa reportedly revealed experiencing significant pressure tied to his mediation of major industrial labor disputes. According to the analysis, Soviet covert networks sought to leverage labor unrest to weaken Finnish governance and influence the presidential succession process.
