German emergency services fought a severe fire at the historic Kehlsteinhaus in Bavaria as police detained a suspect on suspicion of arson.

German authorities continue to investigate a major fire that largely destroyed the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle's Nest, near Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. Around 200 emergency personnel responded to the remote site, located at an elevation of 1,834 meters on Mount Kehlstein, after flames were reported on Friday night. Responders encountered severe difficulties due to the steep terrain and high elevation.

Bavarian police confirmed that a suspect was detained near the hilltop structure shortly after emergency crews arrived. Investigators suspect arson was the cause of the blaze, though official inquiries into the circumstances remain active. The historic building, built during the Nazi era as a retreat for Adolf Hitler, was heavily damaged in the incident. No casualties were reported.
