Orange Order parade in Portadown halted by counter-protesters
A controversial Orange Order march in Portadown was halted on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road.
A controversial Orange Order march through Portadown was prevented from taking place on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked the nationalist Garvaghy Road. An early-morning Belfast High Court ruling had upheld a Parades Commission decision allowing a restricted, silent procession of 35 marchers between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., marking the first authorized march along the route since the late 1990s.
However, demonstrators, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered to block the route. Police intervened to halt the procession for public safety, causing the designated time window to expire. Talks among police, parade organizers, and local representatives continued as crowds remained in the area.
