Alberta voters reject independence proposal in non-binding referendum

Voters in Alberta rejected a proposal to pursue independence from Canada, with roughly 76% opting to remain in the country during Monday's non-binding referendum.
Voters in the oil-rich Canadian province of Alberta have rejected a proposal to initiate a path toward independence from Canada. Roughly 76% of voters chose to remain part of the country in the non-binding referendum held on Monday, while around a quarter supported separation.
The vote marks the first time Alberta residents have voted on the issue of independence. The outcome delivers a political boost to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is working to maintain national unity during an ongoing trade dispute with the United States and threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. Opinion polls prior to the vote had consistently shown independence support hovering below 25%.
