Berlin state parliament shrinks following electoral recount in Spandau
A vote recount in Berlin's Spandau constituency transferred a mandate to the AfD and reduced the state parliament's size, alongside shifting demographic turnout trends.
A transmission error in Berlin's Spandau constituency has led to an administrative recalculation of state election results, transferring a direct mandate from Bettina Meißner of the CDU to Tommy Tabor of the AfD. The correction subsequently reduced the total size of the Berlin state parliament by five seats through overhang adjustments.
The recount coincides with broader voter trend shifts across the capital. Die Linke secured strong support among younger demographics, leading recent polling at 22 percent. Conversely, reporting highlights lower overall voter participation among residents with a migration background, particularly in districts like Neukölln. However, specific voter subgroups, including some young residents of Turkish descent, expressed growing interest in the AfD, citing concerns regarding public safety, economic stability, and social order.
