Portadown Orange Order parade halted as protesters block Garvaghy Road
A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown remains blocked after thousands of counter-protesters gathered along Garvaghy Road despite a Belfast High Court ruling.
Tensions persist in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after police halted a contentious Orange Order parade when thousands of counter-protesters blocked its designated route along Garvaghy Road. An early-morning Belfast High Court ruling had upheld a decision by the Parades Commission allowing 35 members of the Protestant order to conduct a silent march between 8:00 am and 9:30 am. The decision marked the first time the procession was permitted along the predominantly nationalist flashpoint since 1998.
Police stopped the march near Drumcree Church as crowds of demonstrators gathered, joined by Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill. The designated time window passed while parade organizers held discussions, leaving the procession unable to proceed. Demonstrators and marchers remained in the area as police monitored the situation and called for calm.
