Slovakia's coalition aligns with far right amid cabinet turmoil
Slovakia's ruling coalition forms an electoral pact with the far-right Republika party following cabinet friction and the dismissal of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s ruling coalition is adjusting its political strategy following the parliamentary dismissal of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba. Initiated by Slovak National Party leader Andrej Danko alongside opposition lawmakers, the removal underscored growing internal friction within the governing bloc.
In response to shifting political dynamics, Fico's Smer party, together with coalition partners Hlas and the Slovak National Party, formed an official electoral pact with the far-right Republika movement to back Peter Hambálek for Trnava regional governor. Republika currently holds third place in national preference polls, despite recent public criticism regarding a provocative membership application form issued by its youth wing. Meanwhile, voter sentiment in Fico’s hometown of Topoľčany remains supportive, with loyalists attributing recent cabinet instability to coalition partners rather than Fico’s leadership.
