US prepares sweeping Iran sanctions aimed at isolating Tehran's economy
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced new sanctions to isolate Iran's economy, driving the Iranian rial to a record low amid warnings of an "economic D-day."
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans for new economic sanctions against Iran, describing them as "the toughest sanctions in history." Speaking on Monday, Bessent stated that Washington aims to cut off Tehran's economic lifelines by excluding entities that assist the Iranian regime with money laundering from the US dollar system.
Bessent suggested that escalating economic pressure could reduce the need for "new major military operations" in the Middle East. He also issued a stark choice to international partners, declaring that allies must decide whether to support Washington's strategy to "collapse this regime."
The announcement follows warnings from President Donald Trump of an "economic D-day," which triggered a sharp drop in Iran's currency. The Iranian rial fell to a record low of 1.992 million per dollar on unregulated markets.
