EU on high alert over Russian hybrid threats as strikes intensify
European security agencies have raised alerts over potential Russian hybrid sabotage, while Ukraine and Russia intensify strikes on energy infrastructure.
European security agencies remain on heightened alert following warnings from Danish intelligence that Moscow is preparing sabotage operations against domestic industrial targets. The statement aligns with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's recent assertion that the EU will not tolerate hybrid attacks on its territory.
The warnings coincide with ongoing investigations into explosive devices discovered at Leipzig airport. German authorities identified two suspects with ties to Moscow: a Russian citizen carrying a Latvian passport and a Belarusian national holding Russian documentation. Italian security officials confirmed the Belarusian suspect obtained a Schengen visa through Italy, though records indicate he never entered Italian territory.
Simultaneously, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has escalated across energy sectors. The Russian Defense Ministry announced a dedicated campaign aimed at disrupting Ukrainian energy infrastructure, while Kyiv has intensified long-range drone strikes targeting Russian oil refineries.
