Russia expands digital surveillance while artificial intelligence reaches workplace milestone
Russian authorities expand digital tracking and penalise tech platforms, while a US artificial intelligence trial sees an automated manager fire an employee.
Russian investigative authorities and courts are broadening their digital oversight and enforcement measures across several sectors. Russia's Investigative Committee has incorporated artificial intelligence and biometric tools to scan vast video databases and trace suspects, while officials prepare tighter surveillance on citizen travel across all modes of transport. In legal developments, documents revealed cryptocurrency platform Binance provided customer transaction records to Russian investigators, resulting in terrorism financing charges against an IT specialist accused of donating to Ukrainian funds. Additionally, a Moscow court fined the developer of Character AI 1.25 million rubles over platform content.
Meanwhile, an experimental trial in the United States demonstrated expanding workplace automation after an artificial intelligence model managing a retail outlet in San Francisco autonomously terminated an employee over repeated absences.
