US and Iran navigate conflicting diplomatic signals over Strait of Hormuz
Diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz face conflicting signals as Washington cites imminent progress while Tehran denies direct talks.
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate Middle East tensions and restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continue amid conflicting signals from Washington and Tehran. United States officials expressed optimism that an agreement to reopen the strategic passage could be finalised within days, bolstered by Qatari mediation.
However, Tehran continues to deny direct negotiations with Washington. Iranian officials instead announced a bilateral arrangement with Oman regarding coordinates for a new navigation corridor, subject to a joint declaration without third-party interference. The diplomatic track faces further friction after US President Donald Trump stated he would demand financial compensation from Tehran for past overseas attacks and domestic unrest, casting uncertainty over a swift diplomatic breakthrough.
