European security experts and military leaders warn of escalating Russian hybrid warfare, election interference risks, and heightened tensions over maritime sanctions enforcement.

Security experts and military leaders across Northern Europe are warning of escalating Russian hybrid warfare aimed at destabilising the continent and testing NATO unity. Recent incidents, including sabotage plots and drone incursions, indicate a more dangerous operational phase, according to defence analysts.

Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur cautioned that upcoming elections across the Baltic Sea region face heightened vulnerability to Russian influence campaigns. Concurrently, Sweden's military leadership has urged heightened preparedness against potential provocations designed to probe Western resilience.

Tensions also remain sharp on other fronts. Ukrainian forces conducted long-range drone strikes against oil refineries deep inside Russian territory, while Moscow threatened retaliation over European seizures of sanctions-evading oil tankers—a move Russian President Vladimir Putin branded "piracy," which Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson attributed to Kremlin frustration.
