Spanish authorities bolster Ceuta security amid conflicting migrant estimates
Spain reinforces Ceuta's border with naval ships and police as officials disagree over the total number of recent migrant arrivals.
Spanish authorities have increased military and police deployments around Ceuta following a recent border breach at El Tarajal. Spain's Interior and Defence ministries have stationed three naval vessels offshore and deployed extra riot officers, even as initial processing of asylum claims begins and border operations normalize.
Discrepancies remain regarding the scale of the influx. Central government officials estimate that 2,500 migrants remain in the enclave, including roughly 500 unaccompanied minors. In contrast, local autonomous authorities claim 6,000 migrants are present, while Ceuta President Juan Vivas suggested total entries reached up to 80,000. Reports also indicate friction between Spanish ministries concerning military detentions and diplomatic strategy toward Morocco.
