Overnight Russian missile strikes hit the Kyiv region, killing at least 17 people as Ukraine failed to intercept incoming missiles, prompting renewed calls for Western air defenses.

Nighttime Russian bombardment across the Kyiv region resulted in widespread casualties and damaged civilian areas, according to Ukrainian officials. Air defense systems failed to intercept any incoming missiles during an alert that lasted over an hour, affecting at least seven locations, including residential neighborhoods and commercial warehouses.

Casualty figures differed across Portuguese media outlets: RTP and Diário de Notícias reported at least 17 fatalities and up to 44 injuries, whereas Expresso initially recorded 14 deaths, describing the event as "one of the deadliest attacks of the year" against the Ukrainian capital.

Following the strikes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed calls for Western military aid, stating that "interceptors of ballistic missiles could have saved lives." Moscow maintained its forces hit military targets, while Kyiv accused Russia of intentionally targeting non-military infrastructure.
