Spain begins processing asylum claims after Ceuta migrant influx
Spain begins processing asylum claims in Ceuta as central and local authorities remain divided over arrival figures and prepare for potential future crossings.
Spanish authorities have begun processing approximately twenty asylum requests following the recent migrant influx into Ceuta, as border conditions between Castillejos and the enclave gradually normalize.
Disagreements over total arrivals persist between officials. Central government representative Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano stated that around 2,500 migrants, including 500 unaccompanied minors, remain in Ceuta. However, regional authorities estimate the number at 6,000. Reports also indicate some minors are swimming back to Morocco independently.
Security forces are bracing for potential further breaches after a Guardia Civil report warned of a "real risk" of another mass crossing on August 15, driven by social media calls. The situation continues to stoke political friction in Madrid regarding security deployment.
