US and Iran to resume talks as Trump pauses strikes
The US and Iran prepare for diplomatic negotiations after Washington suspended planned military strikes, sending Asian crude oil prices down by over five percent.
Fresh diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran are set to begin on Monday following President Donald Trump’s decision to pause planned military strikes against Iranian targets. Trump indicated the decision followed requests from regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, while asserting that Tehran remains "almost defeated."
The diplomatic shift comes after American forces intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at U.S. troops in the region. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian insisted Washington must adhere to established framework agreements. Meanwhile, Tehran is reportedly concluding negotiations with Oman regarding transit rights in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where an explosion was recently reported near a tanker.
Amid hopes of a diplomatic resolution, Asian crude oil prices dropped by more than five percent. Concurrently, Saudi Arabia announced a maritime coalition to protect shipping lanes across the Red Sea.
