Wildfires in France and Spain force massive evacuations as blazes reach Bordeaux
Wildfires across France and Spain have displaced up to 325,000 people as emergency crews struggle against extreme heat and high winds near Bordeaux.
Emergency crews across southwestern France and Spain are continuing efforts to contain massive wildfires propelled by high temperatures and strong winds. French President Emmanuel Macron convened a crisis meeting as blazes reached the outskirts of Bordeaux, forcing rail closures and route alterations for the Tour de France. In Spain, authorities declared a national emergency as fires spread across several regions.
Disruptions and fatalities have been reported, including the deaths of two firefighters in France. Fire services warned that extreme weather conditions were exacerbated by an "unprecedented pyrocumulonimbus cloud" creating its own lightning and wind gusts. Authorities in France's Var region have also opened investigations into suspected arson following three simultaneous fire ignitions. Evacuation estimates across both nations range between 250,000 and over 325,000 people.
