Wildfires reach Bordeaux outskirts as firefighter deaths and mass evacuations grow
Wildfires in France reach the outskirts of Bordeaux, leaving two firefighters dead and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes across France and Spain.
Raging wildfires in southwestern France have advanced into the outskirts of Bordeaux, forcing railway closures and route adjustments to the Tour de France. Two firefighters have been killed fighting the blazes. In the Gironde department alone, over 42,000 hectares have burned and 220,000 residents remain in emergency shelters.
French interior officials reported 115,000 hectares burned nationwide this year, while authorities in Var launched arson investigations following suspected deliberate ignitions. French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency meeting as extreme conditions, including fire-generated storm clouds, severely hamper containment.
Displacement figures vary across sources: BBC News and France24 report over 250,000 people evacuated across France and Spain, while Helsingin Sanomat reports more than 325,000.
