Oil prices plummet as US pauses Iran strikes despite regional escalation
Oil prices fell over 9% following a second night of paused US strikes on Iran, as maritime mine incidents and Ukraine-Iran Caspian Sea clashes highlight ongoing global security risks.
Global oil prices fell over 9% below $88 per barrel after the United States paused airstrikes against Iranian targets for a second consecutive night to allow space for diplomatic discussions.
Despite the pause in US operations, maritime security risks persist. A commercial tanker sustained damage after hitting a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz while navigating without Iranian authorization. Concurrently, fighting between Yemen's Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia has raised security concerns in the Red Sea energy corridor.
Meanwhile, Ukraine dismissed Iranian retaliation threats following Kyiv's strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated, "Iran's threats are unjustified and groundless," labeling Tehran an accomplice to Russian aggression. Additionally, Pentagon figures reveal at least 624 US service members have been wounded since military action against Iran began in February.
