Global oil prices plunge as US and Iran maintain strike pause
Global oil prices plummeted over 9% as the US paused strikes on Iranian targets for a second night to allow room for diplomatic talks, despite ongoing Red Sea and Gulf security incidents.
Global oil prices dropped significantly on Monday following a two-night pause in US military strikes against Iranian targets, raising hopes for a diplomatic resolution. Brent crude fell more than 9% to below $88 a barrel, reversing gains from the previous week when prices exceeded $100.
The US ambassador to the United Nations stated that military actions were halted to give "talks some space." However, regional security concerns persist. Skirmishes between Yemen-based Houthi militants and Saudi Arabian forces have escalated near the Red Sea energy chokepoint. Additionally, reports indicate a commercial tanker struck a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz after attempting to navigate an unapproved maritime route without Iranian coordination. US President Donald Trump reportedly ordered the reduction in strikes over the weekend.
