Wildfires force military deployment in France and evacuate space facility near Madrid
Wildfires in France and Spain prompt military deployment, 110,000 evacuations in Gironde, and the transfer of NASA space communication operations to California.
Severe wildfires across southwestern Europe have forced military deployments and emergency evacuations in France and Spain.
In France, President Emmanuel Macron ordered the armed forces to assist civil defense teams and requested European Union aid. Wildfires in the Gironde region have destroyed more than 19,000 hectares and advanced toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area, prompting evacuations of 110,000 residents. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that emergency crews were "exhausted."
In Spain, officials acknowledged that a wildfire near Madrid had exceeded extinction capacity. The blaze threatened a major space communication complex, forcing the evacuation of personnel and the temporary transfer of NASA deep-space operations to California.
