ICC member states vote to dismiss chief prosecutor Karim Khan
ICC member states have voted to permanently dismiss chief prosecutor Karim Khan following allegations of sexual misconduct.
Member states of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have voted to dismiss chief prosecutor Karim Khan following an internal inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct.
During a closed-door meeting held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, 82 of the tribunal's 125 member nations supported a resolution to remove the 56-year-old British lawyer from his position. According to court official statements, 13 countries opposed the measure while 15 abstained.
The decision comes after the governing assembly concluded that Khan committed a "serious breach of duty and serious misconduct" involving a female colleague. Khan, who was appointed as the court's lead prosecutor in 2021 and suspended earlier this year, has consistently rejected all accusations against him.
