UN experts call for an immediate halt to U.S. third-country deportations after a media investigation reveals over 25,000 migrants were sent to undisclosed nations.

A media investigation led by Forbidden Stories revealed that the U.S. government transferred at least 25,447 migrants to 28 third countries under undisclosed bilateral agreements. Internal U.S. State Department documents indicate that approximately 20,000 people were bused to Mexico, while over 5,000 others were flown to foreign nations with which they had no prior connections, including individuals previously granted protection by U.S. immigration courts.

In response, more than a dozen United Nations human rights experts urged Washington to immediately halt third-country deportations, warning that sending asylum seekers to unfamiliar foreign states exposes them to severe risks of torture, abuse, and persecution. Simultaneously, human rights advocates cautioned that U.S. authorities are preparing to deport hundreds of detained Afghans to Pakistan for eventual transfer to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, a move that could affect relatives of former U.S. military allies.
